At the exhibition CES 2020 the new conceptual Mercedes-Benz - VISION AVTR was presented. The futuristic concept of the presented electric car combines man, nature and the car in a unique way. Ola Callenius, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG, in his speech presented the concept car together with Oscar winner and Avatar movie creator James Cameron. It was the philosophy created by the cult director in the fantastic film that formed the basis of the VISION AVTR.
"Mercedes-Benz has always been one of the most technologically advanced premium brands. Now it's time to combine luxury with eco-friendliness. It's the only way we can meet the standards of the future.
VISION AVTR design is the embodiment of eco-friendly design.
The innovative VISION AVTR concept combines eco-friendly interaction between interior, exterior and UX design. The entire design process was focused on a concrete result - a unique experience of interaction and perception of the concept car by the driver and passengers. It was about creating a unique space in which passengers have a biometric connection with each other, with the vehicle and the surrounding world.
The unique design architecture of VISION AVTR combines interior and exterior, creating a holistic world on a visual and emotional level. The lateral external opening passes through the interior and creates an endless loop, prototyped by the sacred connection between the Na'vi people in the film Avatar and their natural habitat. Also, thanks to the elongated "One Bow" design and organic design philosophy, VISION AVTR shows a radical new stage in the automotive industry. Thus, having gone from the concept of consciousness to the unique fusion of man and car, the engineers of Mercedes-Benz managed to create a conceptual electric car VISION AVTR.
The laconic continuation of the external minimalistic design is the front seats made in a very organic form, which resembles leaf hammocks from the planet Pandora. While the central console symbolizes the Tree of Souls, the most sacred place in the Na'vi.
The control box is intuitive and incredibly functional. In addition, the control center is located in such a way that it is easily accessible for both the driver and the passenger, as well as for rear passengers. In this way, VISION AVTR establishes a close biometric connection with the driver and helps to increase environmental awareness.
The free space, such as the back of the seats and the interior of the roof, is made of a special fabric that changes color. Depending on the lighting, the textiles can be dark blue or gentle light blue. But the eco-friendly interior of the electric car is also enhanced by the use of DINAMICA® vegetarian leather, the first and only microfiber that guarantees environmental efficiency throughout the entire production cycle. DINAMICA® is a recycled material made of old clothes, fabrics and PET plastic bottles.
VISION AVTR electric concept car drive system
VISION AVTR has been developed according to the latest innovative developments in electrical drives. The basis for the performance of an electric car is a heavy-duty and compact high-voltage battery. This revolutionary battery technology is based on the chemistry of organic graphene-based cells for the first time and completely eliminates the use of rare, toxic and expensive minerals. Thus, electric mobility becomes completely independent from ground resources. In addition, the technology is also 100% recyclable thanks to its composting capability. As a result, Mercedes-Benz stresses the high relevance of the future waste-free economy in the raw materials sector.
With a total engine power of over 350 kW, VISION AVTR sets a new benchmark for the EQ Power range. Thanks to intelligent and fully adaptive torque distribution, the power of the four fully customised motors is not only controlled in the best possible way in terms of driving dynamics, but above all highly efficient. The innovative all-wheel drive provides completely new freedom and dynamics, while at the same time guaranteeing the greatest possible safety.
In addition, compared to modern battery systems with a capacity of up to 1200 W/l, the technology also impresses with its exceptional fast charging capability. The battery can be fully charged in less than 15 minutes. As a result, with an output of around 110 kWh, VISION AVTR provides an electrical distance of over 700 kilometers.
Test drive Mercedes-Benz VISION AVTR
.Inspired by the movie "Avatar" by James Cameron, the dreamers of Mercedes-Benz created the unique VISION AVTR. But how ready is the car for mass production? Together with chief designers and experts Gorden Wagener, Vera Schmidt and Alexander Dung, we found out if the VISION AVTR would be able to feel confident public roads.
Back in January, Mercedes-Benz demonstrated a futuristic concept at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The presentation of the electric model was the main event of the automobile world, but the question of practical application of the car remained open until this moment. On its official website, the legendary brand presented a video overview of the test drive Mercedes-Benz VISION AVTR in California.
"The main purpose of VISION AVTR development was to create a vehicle that goes beyond the usual understanding and pushes the boundaries of the possible not only in the segment of electric cars, but also in the automotive industry as a whole", - says Gorden Wagener, chief designer of Mercedes-Benz.
Streamlined aerodynamic shapes, a futuristic biodesign based on complete stability and harmony with nature, as well as many recycled materials have made it possible to achieve this goal. The concept of a completely new interaction between man, car and nature was the basis for the creation of a completely unique multifunctional control unit on the central console that allows the driver to operate with one hand from either side.
"If you put your hand on the Mercedes-Benz VISION AVTR control unit, the interior comes to life and the car recognizes the driver by the heartbeat and breath," says Vera Schmidt, head of UX Design.
The car communicates with the driver without voice or commands, but based on your feelings and user experience. The new VISION AVTR is not just a vehicle, but a smart body that can adapt to humans.
While in the cabin, you can notice that the dashboard we know is completely absent. Instead, its function is performed by an intelligent projection. It is enough for the driver or passenger to raise his hand and the system will project the car menu directly to the palm of his hand. In order to select the desired setting you just need to squeeze your hand into your fist. Modern luxury as it is, where design, technology and ecology are one and the same.
"Combining the world of science from the film with our reality and making the car recognizable as a representative of the Mercedes-Benz brand was the most difficult task. The design concept of Mercedes-Benz VISION AVTR was developed 2 years from the first draft to the finished car", - specifies Alexander Dang, the exterior designer.
Mercedes-Benz sought to make Vision AVTR more organic than modern cars, and therefore created 33 "bionic flaps" on the back of the electric car, which look like reptile scales. The main functions of the flaps include adaptive aerodynamics and communication with other drivers. You can accelerate, brake or turn - with artificial intelligence and motion design, the flaps will demonstrate your intentions to others, which greatly enhances safety.
After seeing this, there is no doubt that the management of the exquisite VISION AVTR by Mercedes-Benz is a unique and incomparable feeling that will soon await connoisseurs of the iconic brand.
